While most omega-3 supplements are made using fish oil, Omega XL stands out by using Green-Lipped Mussel which doesn’t have a fishy aftertaste.

Omega-3 supplements are mostly needed if you are someone unable to receive them through your diet. Joint pain doesn’t have only one cause, in many cases poor lifestyle habits to influence it.

The article covers a 360 view of joint health supplement Omega XL. It reviews the ingredients present in it, its benefits, side effects, and a lot more.

Excited? Let’s dive in.

What is Omega XL?

Omega XL is an Omega-3 supplement marketed for alleviating joint pain, improving mobility and muscle recovery.

The supplement avoids the use of dietary fish oil as an Omega-3 source. Omega-3 in Omega XL is sourced from Green-Lipped Mussels from Pristine Waters of New Zealand.

There are over 30+ fatty acids (including DHA and EPA) packed inside this supplement without revealing the amount of each.

Omega XL claims to have research of more than 35 years on this supplement to help joint pain and muscle soreness. But there’s no link to the research page.

Omega-3 Overview

Now, the very obvious question. What is Omega-3? And why does your body need it?

Omega-3 fatty acids are the ones that your body isn’t capable of producing by itself. Thus, it is a family of essential fatty acids.

DHA, EPA, and ALA are the three main types of omega-3 fatty acids.

Though DHA and EPA have enough solid evidence for their effectiveness, it is not the main ingredient in Omega XL.

Omega-3 fatty acids are the key component of almost every cell wall in your body. They help regulate the proper function of your brain, eyes, heart, and immune system.

The manufacturer claims Omega XL to be a more potent Omega-3 source than any fish oil.

Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA) and Linoleic Acid are the fatty acids through which your body can prepare almost every fatty acid.

So, the reason for more than 30+ fatty acid presence in Omega XL is still unclear.

Omega XL Manufacturer

Great Healthworks is the manufacturer and distributor of Omega XL. It is their flagship product.

It is a direct-to-consumer-based company in the US that manufactures several health and wellness products. Except for Omega XL, they sell most other supplements through Amazon.

The company is BBB accredited and has received an A+ from them. Still, the customer ratings are highly disappointing.

Ingredients In Omega XL

On their official website, Omega XL doesn’t paste any supplement facts. But while we navigated through Amazon, we found it contained Green Lipped Mussel, Olive Oil, and Vitamin E.

Also, the ingredients information is disclosed under the FAQ page of Omega XL. Let’s understand the science behind the use of these ingredients.

1. Green-Lipped Mussel:

Scientifically known as Perna Canaliculus, Green-Lipped Mussel (GLM) is an aquatic animal belonging to the phylum Mollusca.

It is native to New Zealand and is gaining popularity across the globe as a nutritional supplement.

GLM is a shellfish well known for its zinc and Omega-3 content. Omega XL claims to provide Omega-3 fatty acids in the most absorbable form.

A pilot study on GLM, where 21 subjects were given 3000mg of mg per day for 8 weeks found out: GLM administration showed significant improvement in Joint Pain, Mobility, and Stiffness.

This property of GLM is also attributed to its anti-inflammatory property, due to which it is able to reduce joint inflammation.

Another randomized clinical trial on 80 patients found GLM liquid complex to be more effective than fish oil for alleviating OA-induced joint pain.

Overall, the use of Green-Lipped Mussel in Omega XL has decent evidence to support joint pain. Still, we think GLM is yet to be explored more.

2. Extra Virgin Olive Oil:

Omega XL uses extra virgin olive oil which is said to be the purest form of olive oil. This form is least processed due to which it is able to retain its antioxidants and vitamins.

It reduces the inflammation in joints which in turn can help with joint pain. Oleocanthal, a phenolic derived from Olive oil, is found to have similar anti-inflammatory effects to ibuprofen.

A randomized clinical trial on 60 women found olive oil to be successful at controlling Rheumatoid Arthritis manifestation and joint pain.

Olive oil’s presence in diet may also help prevent cartilage degeneration in patients with osteoarthritis.

3. Vitamin E:

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in your body and prevents your cells from free radical damage.

Oxidation of cells in your body is also linked with arthritis. Also, Vitamin E has also been linked with preventing cartilage degeneration.

Vitamin E anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects are found helpful for patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

While there is little evidence to support Vitamin E for joint pain, it still requires further research to validate its effectiveness.

Takeaway: Green-Lipped Mussel in Omega XL is a good source of Omega-3 and for joint pain and muscle soreness. But furthermore, clinical trials on humans are still needed. Vitamin E and Olive Oil lack solid evidence for healing joint pain.

Omega XL Benefits

Omega Xl contains a powerful combination of fatty acids and other natural ingredients that claims to provide better benefits fish oils-based Omega-3 supplements.

The claimed benefits of Omega XL include:

  • It reduces joint discomfort and inflammation. This can especially benefit old people with conditions like osteoarthritis.
  • Omega XL comes in small and softgel pills that make it much easier to swallow than supplements made with fish oil.
  •  It doesn’t disappoint you as it does not have a fishy aftertaste.
  • Omega XL has sufficient amounts of EPA and DHA, that have enough evidence for their effectiveness.
  • To showcase the efficiency of this supplement the company claims that it has 30 years of clinical research backing this supplement.

Besides these claims from Omega XL, it contains green-lipped mussel extract. Early research on New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract suggests that taking by mouth reduces the pain and stiffness including symptoms of osteoarthritis.

But there is only moderate evidence and not all research says/agrees that it’s helpful in joint discomfort and inflammation.

Omega XL Side Effects

Omega Xl joint health supplement has side effects associated with its active ingredients and contains molluscan shellfish oil. So be cautious if you have an intolerance to shellfish.

Some side effects you may experience with Omega XL active ingredients include:

  • Omega XL has several fatty acids which can cause side effects related to the stomach like gas, diarrhea, and bloating. Thus, it recommends you to take the jelly capsules with meals.
  • The shellfish used in Omega XL may show mild side effects such as rashes on skin, throat inflammation and breathing difficulties.
  • The amount of Vitamin E used in Omega XL isn’t mentioned in the supplement. You must know higher doses of Vitamin E may lead to blood thinning and increase chances of stroke.
  • Green-Lipped Mussel may lead to liver inflammation due to the toxins used in different supplements made from it.

Omega XL may even interact negatively with certain medicines such as blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Recent studies show that there are no significant side effects associated with mussels supplements. This is a good sign that prevents Omega XL supplements from showing many dangerous side effects.

The recommended dose for Omega XL is having 2 capsules at a time. This way you’ll need 2 containers each month. Later if you like you can even take 4 capsules one time a day.

Omega XL Customer Reviews

While navigating Omega XL reviews across various online stores, it seemed to provide a very positive experience to its users.

On amazon Omega XL was rated 4.4 out of 5 while on eBay it was rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2500+ and 900+ users respectively.

Omega XL, as said by most users, helped heal their joint pain and showed effect even before they finished a single bottle.

The disappointed reviews had complaints about the capsules getting stuck together and not helping their joint pain even after a month.

Below are some reviews picked from Amazon’s and Ebay’s reviews section about Omega XL. The reviews are arranged in the order – positive to critical.

I bought these for my mom who was complaining about joints pain and was having difficulty to bend her fingers. One week after starting taking this supplement she started feeling better. She only takes one tablet per day. Just finished her first bottle and ordered the second one. – Patricia Stone

I am writing this review based on my previous order, as I have not yet received my latest order of three.  For me, this product is great!  I have inflammation I am constantly battling. When I take Omega XL in the morning, I go most of the day with virtually no inflammation and no joint aches and pain either.  The little softgel pills are very tiny and easy to swallow, unlike many others I take.  I really enjoy this product. – Ebay Customer.

I bought this for my elderly mother hoping it would help alleviate her pains but when she took the first pill she got really sick with vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms persisted for two days. I even considered taking her to the ER. She has not taken any more and now we have a full bottle. -Amazon Customer

I purchased 2 bottles of 60 capsules before and decided to buy the 120 capsules bottle and this how it came, all clumped together and sticky, i’m not going to consume that and it smells very fresh, guess that’s how the oil smells. – Ronald Assee

Omega XL Reviews Takeaway

Compared to other Omega-3 supplements, Omega XL does stand out in the selection of ingredients (i.e. using GLM instead of fish oil). Also, the supplement gets the job done.

For most Omega XL seemed to help with joint pain and gave relief within a month. While few people didn’t receive the expected result from it. So its effectiveness is mostly dependent on your body’s response.

The cost of Omega XL is quite high compared to its alternative based on Green-Lipped mussels. And for conditions like joint pain, consulting your health provider should be the first priority.
